Now more than ever, communication, timeliness and cultural adaptation are necessary for businesses that want to attract or keep international clients and partners. After all that spit and polish you invest in your brand’s image and the elbow grease that goes into positioning your brand, you don’t want to be one of those stories about translation disasters and cultural faux-pas. You want to be the one laughing when you get that particular forwarded e-mail.

Fortunately, the solution is simple and available in English. Workplace Languages makes it easy with our network of over 250 qualified translators, whose mother tongue is the target language. We have languages you’ve never even heard of. And for culturally sensitive issues, our panel of experts boasts a Latino Cultural Liaison, a Business Culture and Customs Specialist, and a Hispanic Marketing Specialist. It’s like one-stop shopping.

Set Yourself Apart - Make Yourself More Marketable - Learn Spanish!

With today's economy, it is now more important than ever to keep yourself ahead of the competition. These are hilarious. Just thought I'd share. Happy Monday everyone.

1. Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used this in an American campaign: "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux."

2. Coors put its slogan, "Turn It Loose," into Spanish where its translation was read as "Suffer From Diarrhea."

3. Clairol introduced the "Mist Stick" curling iron in German only to find out that "mist" is slang for manure.

4. When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as they did in the U.S., with the beautiful Caucasian baby on the label. Later they learned that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the label of what's inside because most people can't read.

5. Colgate introduced a toothpaste in France called Cue, the name of a notorious naughty magazine. (insert oral joke here).

6. A now-defunct American T-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the Spanish market during the Pope's visit. Instead of "I saw the Pope" (el papa), the shirts read "I saw the potato" (la papa).

7. Pepsi's "Come alive with the Pepsi Generation" was read as "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave" in Chinese by billions of potential consumers.

8. The Coca-Cola name in China was first read as "Ke-kou-ke-la", meaning "Bite the wax tadpole" or "female horse stuffed with wax" depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 characters to find a phonetic equivalent "ko-kou-ko-le" translating into "happiness in the mouth."

9. When Parker Pen marketed a ball-point pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to have read, "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you." Instead, the company thought that the word "embarazar" (to impregnate) meant to embarrass, so the ad read: "It won't leak in your pocket and make you pregnant."

And, number ten...

10. Frank Perdue's chicken slogan, "It takes a strong man to make a tender chicken" was translated into Spanish as "It takes an aroused man to make a chicken affectionate."

Workplace English just for Latinos

Check out all of our Bilingual Training Products created specifically for your Spanish-speaking employees. I'll keep this short:

Ask for the obvious testimonials & client list

Do they understand localization - Is the language translated appropriate / "universal" & understood by your employees or whomever the target audience?

Did you ask for a sample translation - Did the target audience provide feedback on the accuracy of the translation?

Does the translator or translation agency use any type of translation memory (TM)?

Does a seaparate team of translators proof the work / finished product or is it the same team?

What guarantee are you given if you are not satisfied? What specific steps will be taken to correct any issues?

If the agency is building a work-specific lexicon for a particular translation project, will receiving this be a part of the total fee already discussed or will this customized dictionary / lexicon by an additional charge?

Those are just a few suggestions I can think of off the top of my head. I hope this information can be beneficial.

Panel Assembled

Workplace Languages' Panel of Experts has now been assembled. There will always be varying levels of English proficiency in the classes but not all of the students that want to participate are a good fit for the class. Sometimes participants need additional help before they qualify for a Level I class and other times their level of proficiency is too advanced for a Level I class. Here are my thoughts:

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING APPROPRIATE CANDIDATES for a
LEVEL I WORKPLACE ENGLISH CLASS

I. TYPICALLY POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS OF A LEVEL I COURSE DO NOT CURRENTLY HAVE THE NECESSARY ENGLISH SKILLS IF THEY:

· Do not make an attempt to communicate to the GM / Supervisor / Coworkers in English
· Haven’t completed the 2nd grade in the U.S. or their country
· Possess only a few vocabulary words in English
· Have worked less than 6 months at their company

II. CANDIDATES THAT ARE A “GOOD FIT” FOR A LEVEL I WORKPLACE ENGLISH COURSE TYPICALLY:

· Is shy / not confident of their ability (although they may possess good speaking skills)
· Knows a number of vocabulary words in English
· Have problems “getting their point across” although they can do it occasionally
· Is reluctant to speak with customers but will be able to communicate some ideas to their GM / Supervisor
· Needs to work at their company 6+ months
· Can make simple requests but can’t elaborate / give many details
· Is able to fill out personal information on a application – name, phone, address …
· Wants to take the class / has aspirations of advancement within the organization (have a bilingual coworker elicit some of this information)
· Would have completed any grade between 2nd and 8th in the U.S. or in their country

III. INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE CONSIDERED A GOOD FIT FOR AN ADVANCED ESL CLASS WOULD:

· Be able to communicate their ideas and make simple requests
· Speak “choppy” English and would have an accent but could “get their point across”
· Not have any difficulty completely filling out any simple forms
· Be able to explain roles & responsibilities of various positions in a simple fashion
· Have completed 8th grade or above in the U.S. or in their own country

PANEL OF EXPERTS IS COMING

At Workplace Languages, we believe the foundation of any successful organization is effective communication. Amazing how the day goes by. Just wanted to give you a little background on myself and how I got started with this line of work. I'll blog more on this down the line on this but I will be the first to admit I never saw myself running a business like this.

I took French back in high school and if you asked any classmate of mine, "What do you see Ed Rosheim doing after college?" - I can guarantee there isn't a person alive that would have pegged me for a language major. Before attending UNI (Northern Iowa) - I literally had never spoken one "Hola" or " ¿Cómo estás?" Spanish wasn't even offered at our high school. I took Spanish 101 as an elective as a sophomore in college. I struggled with the language but loved it and ended up getting an MA in Spanish. This wasn't because I wanted to pursue that degree but rather I thought I better continue to learn having only a total of 3 years of Spanish under my belt. During that time I received a K - 12 degree in Spanish but didn't think that was the path I wanted to take.

After college my first job was as a bilingual social worker, then I taught some basic ESL & Spanish classes at a few community colleges in Iowa. Please keep in mind - I was still no language prodigy having started so late but I loved teaching adults and thought I had a knack for putting them at ease and communicating the basics of the language.

I moved up to Minnesota back in 1996 with my wife Cheryl (hard to believe) and I got a job at a non-profit and through them I taught Survival Spanish and functional work-specific English to companies like: Pillsbury, the Minneapolis Police, Mystic Lake Casino ... That was it! I had found my niche - teaching basic work-related Spanish & ESL phrases to help companies close the communication gap. I felt (& feel) that I can make a difference with individuals that don't need or want to become language majors - they want to: "get their point across," retain good employees, increase productivity and develop a rapport with their workers.

In closing (and I said I was going to keep this short) it is never too late to pick up enough Spanish or any other language to make an impact where you work. And conversely - giving your employees the opportunity to improve their English does wonders for your bottom line.

TRANSLATION SERVICES DISCOUNT

Workplace Languages, LLC is running a special on all of its translation services through Monday, March 16 2009 - 03-16-09. This was the third time that I have been invited to speak and as always - I thoroughly enjoyed myself. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities from the beignets & chickory coffee to the French Quarter & the Garden District. And the hospitality I receive from all of those involved with the CMAA conference is simply unparalleled. This year I presented Survival Spanish for Today's Workforce - a three-hour interactive seminar that I customize to address the communication issues facing the target audience. The industry-specific Spanish phrases I taught to these country club managers covered a variety of topics. Everyone in attendance wanted to do all they could to build rapport with their Latino employees and also ensure that all of their guests / members have the best experience possible at their clubs. The 3 hours flew by. The participants walked away with some of the basics to "get them up & speaking" immediately. And they also left with the necessary tools to help them continue the learning process outside of the presentation.

Back in St. Paul now and the cold temps of Minnesota. I am very happy to return to the land of 10,000 frozen lakes but had a great time down in N'awlins. I'll post seminar pictures soon on our website - http://www.WorkplaceLanguages.com.

Establishing a Successful Language Program at a Company

When you have set an appointment with a company to discuss online or onsite language training, these are some of the types of questions which you may expect. They make for good discussion points and can be the basis for planning. Developing clear answers to these questions ahead of time will help you further define your program and present yourself as a credible education and training vendor.

1) How much will a workplace Spanish or ESL program cost?

2) How long does the training take?

3) What can the company expect as outcomes?

4) What specific results will you guarantee?

5) What involvement will be required from the company?

6) What is the return on investment for the company?

7) Will on-site workplace Spanish or ESL help worker retention?

8) Is there curriculum already developed?

WHAT A COMPANY CAN EXPECT FROM YOU AS AN EDUCATION CONSULTANT

1) Help in formulating realistic measurement of program results. Results might include test score improvement, willingness of students to be cross-trained, better attendance on the job, speaking up at meetings, reduction in time spent answering questions, reduction in turnover.

2) Suggestions for how the company can reinforce what is being taught in class.

3) An invitation to visit the classroom. For the program to be successful, the company must be involved.

4) Regular information throughout the life of the program about progress and issues

Learn more at http://www.workplacelanguages.com/online_onsite.html

"Grammar-less" vs. Comprehensive Language Learning for Managers

Time is Money

I often get questions from clients about the advantages of “grammar-less” language learning. The simple answer is time. Many busy professionals don’t have time or patience to learn all of the nuances of another language. The traditional approach to language learning can take years. I have taught Spanish & ESL at a number of colleges and I know what doesn’t work: bogging students down with so much grammar that they are reluctant to speak.
When it comes to workplace communication, many companies want their employees to learn industry specific words and phrases without spending time learning material they may never use. That’s why we developed our programs addressing the needs of specific industries by teaching managers the language and cultures of their workers. The formula is the more effective you communicate with your employees the more effective they’ll become in their jobs.
Whether it’s taking online language lessons or using bilingual training products to facilitate learning, I found that teaching managers basic phrases in Spanish or other languages that were specific to their needs not only helps get jobs done but resulted in workers who felt more respected and motivated. Bottom line: companies retain better employees. This can be achieved in a fraction of the time of traditional language learning programs. Sometimes those with limited English proficiency get left behind in fully understanding workplace directives, safety instructions or training methods.

We’ve come up with a few helpful suggestions for managers who work with those with Spanish speaking employees.

State job instructions clearly and be careful about being too impatient with language barriers.

Give employees with Limited English Proficiency time to respond.
Show employees what you need. “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Don’t be shy about praising a job well done. Praise good work publicly and if there are any issues with an employee’s work – you need to talk to individual privately. “Saving face” is big in every culture.

Encourage employees to take a greater role in decisions and management tasks and providing them the necessary tools to communicate more effectively with fellow employees and customers.

New Website!!

We're proud to launch our new website. It was a Training Director for a major luxury hotel chain. His first question was “Can you help me translate a manual in Gujarati?” When I told him “of course we can translate Gujarati” I heard a huge sigh of relief on the other end of the line. Although the Indian language is the 26th most spoken native language in the world, honestly we don’t get a lot of requests for Gujarati. Our network of more than 200 translators helped make this an easy request to fulfill. For our client it was much bigger. A simple training manual in a native language helped their employees understand job tasks faster and more effectively. The employees also expressed their appreciation to their supervisors for providing native language training materials. Another satisfied client but many more satisfied employees.
